Geniculate Artery Embolization Pre-procedure Instructions
Loudoun Medical Group Interventional Radiology Center
Thank you for having your Geniculate Artery Embolization at the Loudoun Medical Group Interventional Radiology Center! Our team is here to help you through the whole process from consultation to follow-up. Here’s an explanation of what to expect before your procedure. If you have any questions or concerns that are not addressed in the instructions, please call or email us at the contact information below.
Procedure Location
The procedure will take place at the Loudoun Medical Group Interventional Radiology Center, a nationally accredited surgical facility.
Address: 1801 Robert Fulton Drive, Suite 510, Reston, VA 20191
Please arrive 60 minutes before your procedure appointment time to allow for all pre-procedure tasks to be completed.
What to Expect on the Day of the Procedure
You will check in at the front desk and complete any outstanding insurance and medical history paperwork. Our nursing staff will place an intravenous (IV) catheter in your arm to deliver sedation medication, making you sleepy or sedated during the procedure. You will not receive general anesthesia or be placed on a breathing machine.
Afterward, you will be taken to the procedure room where your physician will perform the procedure. You will then be brought to the recovery area and monitored until it is safe for you to go home.
Procedure Duration
Please expect to be at the center for approximately 4 hours from registration to recovery. This includes 1-2 hours in recovery.
Pain Expectation
The procedure itself should not be painful, though you may experience mild discomfort. Our nursing staff will ensure that you remain as comfortable as possible throughout recovery. You will also be prescribed pain medication to take at home if needed.
Blood Thinning Medication
If you are taking Aspirin or Plavix, you may continue these medications. For all other blood-thinning medications (e.g., Xarelto, Pradaxa, Eliquis), please contact us 5 days before the procedure to confirm the necessary discontinuation period. Typically, these medications must be stopped for at least 2 full days prior to the procedure and can be resumed afterward.
Pre-procedure Fasting
You may NOT eat or drink for 6 hours before the procedure. However, you may take your medications with a small sip of water, excluding blood-thinning medications.
Transportation
You may NOT drive to/from the procedure. Arrange for a family member or friend to drive you to the procedure and pick you up afterward. Family and friends are not permitted in the procedure room, but they can wait in the designated waiting area.
Pre-procedure Contact
A clinical staff member will contact you prior to the procedure to review your medical history. Please ensure to return any missed calls to answer any questions you may have and to ensure a smooth experience.
If you have any questions, call (703) 783-5355 or email [email protected].
Post-procedure Prescriptions
Upon discharge, you will receive post-procedure care instructions along with the following medications, depending on your allergies and medication tolerance:
- Toradol 10 mg orally every 6 hours for 3 days for severe knee pain.
- Celebrex 200 mg orally twice daily for 14 days for mild to moderate post-procedure pain (after Toradol is completed).
